Very often this gets carried over to business. In fact in the 20+ years I've been in this business I have found that more than 80% of businesses actually invest time and money to make themselves HARDER TO CHOOSE without realizing it.
 
So you must make sure your business stands out. But how? First you have to dare. You must decide right now that you are going to ALLOW your business to gain the recognition it deserves. 

 

2:         WHY YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS A BRAND IDENTITY

When I moved to the US in 1988 to be an antique dealer I quickly ran out of money. I had a few antiques in my garage, but no food in the fridge. I was hungry and by hungry I mean BROKE. Broke and determined to eat and pay rent and of course stay in the US so that I didn't have to go back to England and tell everyone that I was a failure. I was 24 years old and worried that I might be the stupidest person in the world. I had spend all my money on a few antiques, moved to the United States to sell them but had no idea how and now I was completely broke.

I tried and tried and tried but found selling antiques from my garage to be very difficult.

One day I noticed that some shops used antiques and vintage things in their windows and in-store displays so I started trying to sell my antiques to them. Some of them threw me out, but a few started buying from me and soon I was eating again. My business started to grow and over time I began landing bigger accounts. Then one day it dawned on me … these stores weren't just buying antiques -- they were using antiques to differentiate themselves and present their brand identity to the world. I realized I was in the brand identity business and started presenting my business as a professional company specializing in brand identity. Sales got better.

Then one day I realized "oh my goodness gracious - I'm helping companies build their brand identities and I DON'T HAVE A BRAND IDENTITY MYSELF!" So I got busy building one for my business and - to cut a long story short my business took off - I made millions and millions of dollars. Not only that I got myself on CNN and into the news. Big name newspapers and magazines like The Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times wrote about me and my business. My brand identity was a hit. It was so good that I attracted big name 'world famous' customers like Polo Ralph Lauren, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and Disney. 

My business was so successful that one of my competitors hired a private detective to follow me around because they couldn't understand how I was landing all the big deals. Even though the secret was staring them right in their face: My business was very well differentiated and had a compelling brand identity. 

I've spent most of my life building businesses with great brand identities. I've learned by working with those big companies like Polo Ralph Lauren and Nike as well as with hundreds, well actually, thousands of small businesses too.
